Engelheim Vineyards

Engelheim Vineyards: A Must-Stop Winery in North Georgia

On our way to our cabin in Ellijay, we decided to stop by Engelheim Vineyards—and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. Since it was New Year’s Eve, we were in the mood for bubbles, and Engelheim immediately stood out for offering sparkling wines I hadn’t yet come across at a Georgia winery. With chilly mountain air outside and a warm, welcoming atmosphere inside, it was the perfect place to pause, sip, and ease into the start of our getaway.

Why Engelheim Vineyards Caught Our Attention

When planning our Ellijay getaway, we knew we wanted to include at least one winery stop, but Engelheim immediately stood out. While many North Georgia wineries focus primarily on still wines, Engelheim’s sparkling wine offerings caught my eye—especially since it’s not something you see often at Georgia wineries.

Visiting on New Year’s Eve made the timing feel even more fitting. Bubbles felt like a must, and Engelheim offered something a little different from the typical tasting lineup. Just as important, the winery is fully pup-friendly, which was a must for us since Hank was in tow.

Between the sparkling wines, mountain setting, chalet-style tasting room, and welcoming atmosphere—for both people and pups—Engelheim felt like the perfect stop before settling into cabin life.

The Wines We Tasted

Since we visited on New Year’s Eve, bubbles were the priority—and Engelheim absolutely came through with a sparkling lineup I hadn’t yet found at a Georgia winery.

We started with Glitzern, a sparkling blend of Vidal Blanc, Traminette, and Petit Manseng. It’s a bright, lively pour with notes of citrus and crisp apple, plus subtle floral undertones that keep it feeling fresh and celebratory.

Next up was the Brut Rosé—the Gold Medal winner—and it was easy to see why it stands out. It has a clean, fresh aromatic profile and genuinely tastes like biting into a fresh strawberry, finishing delightfully dry and polished.

We also tried Betty’s Bubbles, a crisp, bubbly rosé with notes of fresh raspberries and strawberries. Compared to the Brut Rosé, this one leans off-dry, making it an especially easy sip (and a great option if you like a touch of fruitiness without going sweet).

To round things out, we tasted the Red Providence, a Double Gold, Best in Class winner. This European-style blend of Tannat, Teroldego, and Souzão brings structure and depth, with notes of black currant, anise, and smoke, balanced by blackberry and plum.

Between the sparkling wines and that standout red, this tasting felt thoughtful, distinctive, and surprisingly elevated—exactly what I hope to find when I stop in at a new winery.

The Tasting Experience

It was a chilly afternoon when we arrived, so we opted to sit in the enclosed patio, which turned out to be the perfect choice. The space was warm and comfortable while still offering views of the grounds, striking a nice balance between cozy and scenic.

The overall pace of the tasting felt relaxed and unhurried—never crowded or rushed—which made it easy to take our time and enjoy each wine. The setting felt especially fitting for a winter visit, with the mountain backdrop, chalet-style design, and a welcoming atmosphere that invited you to linger a little longer.

Whether you’re stopping by on a cold winter day or during one of the warmer seasons, Engelheim’s tasting experience feels thoughtfully designed to make guests feel comfortable, settled, and welcome from the moment they arrive.

Pup-Friendly and Welcoming

One of the things we appreciated most about Engelheim was how genuinely pup-friendly the winery is. With Hank in tow, it was important to find a spot where he’d be welcome—and Engelheim delivered both inside and out.

Hank was more than happy taking in the scenery from the enclosed patio, and the staff made him feel just as welcome as we were (treats definitely helped). Having a dog-friendly space without feeling like you’re tucked away or in the way makes such a difference, especially when you’re traveling with your pup.

If you’re planning an Ellijay trip and hoping to bring your dog along, Engelheim is an easy yes—welcoming, relaxed, and thoughtfully set up for both two- and four-legged guests.

Meeting the Proprietor: Gary Engle

One of the highlights of our visit was the chance to chat with Gary Engle, the proprietor of Engelheim Vineyards. He had just come in from hand pruning the vines, which somehow made the experience feel even more authentic—one of those moments that reminds you just how hands-on this operation really is.

Gary’s story is a fascinating one. A former Army Colonel turned winemaker, his path to Engelheim isn’t traditional, but it’s clearly driven by passion and purpose. Adding to the connection, he’s originally from South Alabama, just like my husband, which naturally led to a fun conversation about the area—and a little Crimson Tide talk along the way.

He was warm, welcoming, and generous with his time, happy to chat and share his story. That personal interaction added a depth to the visit that you don’t always get at a tasting room and made Engelheim feel less like a stop on a wine trail and more like someone’s true labor of love.

The Chalet-Style Tasting Room & Grounds

Engelheim’s chalet-style tasting room immediately sets the tone for the experience. With its European-inspired design, warm wood details, and mountain backdrop, the space feels cozy and welcoming without feeling overly rustic or themed. It’s the kind of place that works just as well for a winter visit as it does on a warm summer afternoon.

The grounds are thoughtfully maintained and open, offering scenic views that invite you to slow down and take it all in. Even on a cold day, there’s a calm, peaceful energy about the property that makes you want to linger—whether you’re sipping sparkling wine on the enclosed patio or walking the grounds between pours.

The name Engelheim Vineyards translates from German to “Angel Home,” and it truly fits. Between the setting, the wines, and the people behind the experience, the winery feels personal, intentional, and genuinely inviting—more like a place you’re welcomed into than just another tasting stop.

Final Pour

Engelheim Vineyards ended up being one of the most memorable stops of our Ellijay getaway. From the award-winning wines to the cozy winter setting, everything about the visit invited us to slow down. The pup-friendly atmosphere and genuinely welcoming people made it even better.

Stopping in on New Year’s Eve felt especially fitting. Between the bubbles, mountain views, and easy conversation, the visit set the tone for the rest of our trip. It offered something a little different from other North Georgia wineries. Thoughtful wines, a relaxed pace, and an experience that felt personal rather than rushed.

If you’re planning a visit to Ellijay, this is a winery worth prioritizing. You can find current hours, tasting options, and more details on their official website.
