College football is more than just what happens on the field, especially in the SEC. The best SEC college towns turn game day into an entire weekend, with legendary tailgates, packed downtowns, local food and drinks, and traditions that make each destination completely different. Whether you’re planning a trip around your favorite team or simply looking for an excuse to experience a new college town, these nine SEC destinations are worth adding to your fall travel list.
Of course, I may be a little biased when it comes to my number one. As a University of Alabama grad, Tuscaloosa will always be at the top of my list. But I’m giving credit where it’s due—even to a few rivals. From Saturdays in Tuscaloosa and tailgating in The Grove to live music in Austin and a night game in Death Valley, these are nine of the best SEC college towns for turning a football game into a weekend worth traveling for.
#1 Tuscaloosa, Alabama — University of Alabama
There was never really a question about which city would take my number one spot. As a University of Alabama graduate, Tuscaloosa will always feel a little like home. But even putting my Crimson Tide bias aside, there’s something special about a football Saturday here. The entire city comes alive in crimson and white, and whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, the energy around campus is hard to beat.
Game Day
Bryant-Denny Stadium is the center of it all, but the Alabama game-day experience starts long before kickoff. Walk through the Quad, and you’ll find tents packed with fans, TVs showing games from around the country, and plenty of food and drinks flowing. Make time to see the Walk of Champions before heading into the stadium, and if you hear “Sweet Home Alabama” playing somewhere along the way, you’ll quickly understand why Saturdays in Tuscaloosa are different.
Eat & Drink
Game weekends are busy, but part of the fun is making time for a few Tuscaloosa favorites. Grab a drink at Gallettes and, if you’re feeling brave, try the famous Yellowhammer. For barbecue, Dreamland is a Tuscaloosa institution, while downtown has plenty of restaurants and bars for Friday night or a postgame stop.
Beyond Football
If you have some extra time, walk through the University of Alabama campus and visit the Riverwalk along the Black Warrior River. Downtown Tuscaloosa is also close to campus, making it easy to explore without spending your entire weekend in the car.

#2 Athens, Georgia — University of Georgia
It may be home to one of Alabama’s biggest SEC rivals, but Athens earns its spot near the top of this list. It’s one of the best SEC college towns because everything you want from a football weekend is packed into one destination: a beautiful campus, a lively downtown, plenty of places to eat and drink, and an unmistakable game-day atmosphere.
Game Day
Sanford Stadium sits right in the heart of campus, making the walk to the game part of the experience. Tailgates take over the surrounding areas hours before kickoff, and the energy builds as fans make their way toward the stadium. One tradition to watch for is the Dawg Walk, when the team makes its way into Sanford Stadium before the game.
Eat & Drink
Downtown Athens is just steps from campus and has no shortage of options for a football weekend. Creature Comforts Brewing Co. is a great stop for a local beer, while spots like The Place and Last Resort Grill offer Southern-inspired food right downtown. And if you want the full college-town experience, there are plenty of bars to keep the night going after the game.
Beyond Football
Athens has much more going for it than football. The city has a legendary music history, a walkable downtown filled with shops and restaurants, and plenty of local character. If you’re staying for the entire weekend, spend some time exploring downtown rather than heading straight home after the final whistle.

#3 Oxford, Mississippi — Ole Miss
Oxford may be a small Southern town, but on an Ole Miss football weekend, it feels like the center of the SEC. Between the historic Square, a standout food and drink scene, and one of college football’s most famous tailgating traditions, Oxford delivers a game-day experience that feels distinctly its own.
Game Day
You can’t talk about an Ole Miss game without talking about The Grove. The 10-acre area in the heart of campus transforms into an elaborate sea of tents on game day, and tailgating here is practically an event of its own. Expect everything from chandeliers and elaborate spreads to fans dressed a little more stylishly than your average football crowd. Before kickoff, catch the Walk of Champions as the Rebels make their way through The Grove toward Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

Oxford has an impressive dining scene for a town its size. Head to City Grocery on the Square for Southern food and cocktails, or stop by Ajax Diner for a more casual meal. For drinks, you’ll find plenty of options around the Square, making it an easy place to spend Friday night before game-day festivities begin.
Beyond Football
Leave some time to explore the Square, where locally owned shops, restaurants and bars surround the historic courthouse. Literature fans can also visit Rowan Oak, the former home of William Faulkner, for a completely different side of Oxford.

#4 Knoxville, Tennessee — University of Tennessee
Few SEC destinations can match Knoxville when it comes to setting. With the Tennessee River running alongside campus, downtown just minutes away and more than 100,000 fans packing Neyland Stadium, a Tennessee football weekend delivers one of the most recognizable game-day experiences in college football.
Game Day
Neyland Stadium is impressive on its own, but arriving by boat takes game day to another level. The Vol Navy has been a Tennessee tradition for decades, with fans traveling down the Tennessee River and docking near the stadium before kickoff. On land, tailgates fill campus while the Vol Walk gives fans a chance to welcome the team as they head toward Neyland.

Market Square is a great place to start exploring Knoxville’s food and drink scene. You’ll find restaurants, patios and bars within a walkable area, while nearby Old City adds even more options. For a local beer, Knoxville also has a growing brewery scene that makes Friday afternoon or Sunday before heading home worth leaving open.

Spend some time in downtown Knoxville and walk along the Tennessee River waterfront, or head up to the Sunsphere for a view over the city. LSU fans know how to turn a Saturday into an all-day event, and when kickoff happens after dark, the atmosphere around Tiger Stadium gets even better.
Game Day
Known as Death Valley, Tiger Stadium has a reputation as one of the loudest and most intimidating places to play in college football. Before heading inside, spend time walking around campus and taking in the tailgates, where Louisiana flavors are very much part of the experience. Another must is stopping by Mike the Tiger’s habitat near the stadium to see one of the SEC’s most famous live mascots.

Come hungry because Baton Rouge is one SEC destination where the food deserves just as much attention as the football. Louisiana staples like gumbo, jambalaya, crawfish étouffée and po’boys are easy to find around town. The Chimes near LSU is a longtime favorite for Cajun-inspired dishes and drinks, while downtown Baton Rouge offers plenty of additional restaurants and bars for Friday night.

#6 Austin, Texas — University of Texas
Austin may be one of the newest additions to the SEC, but it was an easy addition to this list. This is one of those destinations where you could plan an entire weekend around the city and have the football game be just one part of it. With barbecue, Tex-Mex, live music, rooftop bars and plenty to explore, Austin is a great choice when you want a football trip that also feels like a true city getaway.
Game Day
Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium sits right on the University of Texas campus and holds more than 100,000 fans, so expect plenty of burnt orange on game day. Before kickoff, check out Bevo Blvd and Longhorn City Limits, where the pregame atmosphere includes food, drinks, live music and plenty of Texas spirit. And, of course, keep an eye out for Bevo, one of the most recognizable mascots in college football.

You could build an entire Austin trip around food alone. Barbecue and Tex-Mex should both be on the weekend agenda, whether that means waiting in line for one of the city’s famous barbecue spots or finding a neighborhood taco joint. Austin also has an excellent brewery, cocktail, and rooftop bar scene, giving you plenty of options for Friday night and after the game.

Austin’s live music scene is reason enough to stay an extra night. Explore South Congress, catch some music downtown, walk around Lady Bird Lake, or simply spend an afternoon hopping between restaurants, bars, and shops. #7 Auburn, Alabama — Auburn University
As an Alabama graduate, putting Auburn on a list of the best SEC college towns may hurt just a little. But rivalry aside, Auburn deserves its spot. It delivers exactly what many people picture when they think about a Southern college football town: a walkable campus, generations of traditions and a community that revolves around football Saturdays in the fall.
Game Day
Jordan-Hare Stadium is the center of the action, but one of Auburn’s best-known traditions happens before the game even begins. Tiger Walk brings thousands of fans together to cheer on the team as the players make their way toward the stadium. Once inside, keep an eye on the sky for the pregame eagle flight, one of the most distinctive traditions in college football.

Toomer’s Corner is the heart of downtown Auburn and a natural place to start exploring. Stop at Toomer’s Drugs for its famous lemonade, then wander through the surrounding restaurants and bars. For a more relaxed evening, downtown makes it easy to grab dinner, have a few drinks and soak up the college-town atmosphere without going far from campus.

Auburn’s compact downtown and campus make it an easy destination to explore on foot. Walk through campus, browse the shops around Toomer’s Corner and, if Auburn wins, stick around to see one of its most famous celebrations as fans roll the trees at Toomer’s Corner.

For the full experience, stay close enough to campus to leave the car behind once the weekend begins. And while you probably won’t catch me yelling “War Eagle,” I’ll admit that seeing the eagle fly over Jordan-Hare before kickoff is one SEC tradition worth experiencing.
#8 Columbia, South Carolina — University of South Carolina
Columbia doesn’t always get mentioned first when people talk about SEC football trips, and that’s exactly why it makes this list. South Carolina brings plenty of game-day energy, while Columbia offers a mix of restaurants, breweries, nightlife, and things to do that make it easy to fill an entire weekend.
Game Day
Williams-Brice Stadium sits a few miles from the main university campus, and the surrounding area turns into one big tailgate on game day. One of the most recognizable features is the Cockaboose Railroad, a collection of renovated train cars used for tailgating right outside the stadium. Once “Sandstorm” starts playing inside Williams-Brice, you’ll understand why Gamecock fans have earned a reputation for bringing the energy.
Eat & Drink
The Vista is a great place to start for dinner and drinks, with restaurants and bars packed into a walkable downtown district. Columbia also has a strong local brewery scene if you want something more casual. Five Points, located near campus, delivers more of the traditional college-bar atmosphere.
Beyond Football
Walk along the Three Rivers Greenway, explore the shops and restaurants downtown, or visit the South Carolina State House. If you’re turning the game into a longer trip, Columbia’s central location also makes it easy to pair with another South Carolina destination.

#9 Fayetteville, Arkansas — University of Arkansas
Fayetteville rounds out the list with something a little different from the other best SEC college towns. Set in the Ozarks, it combines Razorback football with a lively downtown, local restaurants and breweries, and easy access to the outdoors. It’s a great pick if you want your football weekend to include more than tailgates and stadiums.
Game Day
Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium sits right on the University of Arkansas campus, where game days bring plenty of cardinal red and calls of “Woo Pig Sooie.” Before kickoff, spend some time walking around campus and experiencing the tailgates before joining the crowd inside the stadium.
Eat & Drink
Dickson Street is the center of Fayetteville’s entertainment scene and an easy place to spend Friday night. Restaurants, bars and live music venues line the area, with even more options around the nearby downtown square. Northwest Arkansas also has a growing craft beer scene, so there are plenty of places to grab a local pour during the weekend.
Beyond Football
This is where Fayetteville really separates itself from many SEC destinations. The surrounding Ozarks offer hiking, scenic drives and plenty of opportunities to get outside. You can also explore the Fayetteville Downtown Square or make the short trip to nearby Bentonville, where you’ll find Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and an impressive food and drink scene.

And while my Crimson Tide roots will always put Tuscaloosa at number one, part of the fun of college football is experiencing how other fan bases celebrate Saturdays in the fall.
So pick a game, make it a weekend and leave enough time to explore beyond the stadium. You may head there for football, but chances are you’ll come home remembering everything that happened before and after kickoff just as much.
