Gulf Shores Getaway: Where to Stay & Eat

There’s something about a Gulf Shores getaway that instantly slows life down a bit. The salty air, warm sunshine, seafood baskets within arm’s reach, and that first glimpse of bright white sand always seem to flip the vacation switch immediately.

I’ve visited Gulf Shores and Orange Beach several times over the years, but this trip felt especially meaningful because I got to experience it through my husband Chris’ perspective. He’s originally from Mobile and has been coming to Gulf Shores since he was a baby, so nearly every stop came with a story, memory, or longtime favorite attached to it.

It wasn’t about discovering a new destination for us — it was about returning to a place that already held a lot of history and familiarity. Between favorite restaurants, beach traditions, and spots he’s visited for years, the trip had a different kind of connection woven into it.

And honestly, after another week spent along Alabama’s Gulf Coast, it reminded me exactly why we keep coming back.

Between the soft white sand beaches, laid-back atmosphere, fresh Gulf seafood, and slower pace, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach make it incredibly easy to settle into vacation mode.

Where to Stay for a Gulf Shores Getaway

Condo Stay at Paradise Isle

For this trip, we rented a one-bedroom, one-bath condo at Paradise Isle 5, and it ended up being the perfect setup for a relaxing beach week.

One of the biggest perks for us was that the condo was pet-friendly, which made traveling much easier. While it wasn’t directly on the beach, the beach access across the street was incredibly convenient and only took a few minutes to walk to.

The condo setup worked especially well for a longer stay. Having a full kitchen, living room, and extra space made it feel much more comfortable than a standard hotel room — especially after long beach days.

If you’re looking for a more relaxed and budget-friendly alternative to a beachfront resort, this type of condo setup is definitely worth considering.

What We Loved

  • Pet-friendly accommodations
  • Easy beach access
  • Full kitchen for snacks and easy meals
  • Comfortable setup for couples
  • More space to spread out during a weeklong stay

Other Places to Stay in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach

Even though we stayed in a condo, we also checked out several other properties during the trip that would make great options depending on your travel style.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Gulf Shores Beach Resort

This newer beachfront resort has a more modern, energetic atmosphere and is great for travelers wanting resort amenities and direct beach access. The suite-style rooms are ideal for families or groups, and the pool area stayed lively throughout the day.

Hotel Indigo Orange Beach – Gulf Shores

Hotel Indigo has more of a boutique coastal vibe with a stylish but relaxed atmosphere. The location in Orange Beach makes it convenient for restaurants, beach access, and exploring the area while still feeling quieter than some of the larger resorts.

The Lodge at Gulf State Park, A Hilton Hotel

For travelers wanting a more nature-focused experience, The Lodge offers a completely different feel from the typical beach resort. Located inside Gulf State Park, it’s surrounded by walking trails, protected dunes, and beautiful beach views that feel peaceful and less commercialized.

Gulf Shores Getaway Beaches & Beach Access

The beaches in Gulf Shores are genuinely beautiful.

The sand is bright white, soft, and surprisingly easy to walk through, while the Gulf water during our trip shifted between deep blue and turquoise depending on the sunlight and weather.

One thing we really appreciated was how accessible everything felt. Public beach access points were easy to find throughout Gulf Shores, and several included outdoor showers and public restrooms, which made cleanup after beach days incredibly convenient.

Even in mid-May, the beaches never felt overwhelmingly crowded. There was still plenty of room to spread out, relax, and actually enjoy the slower pace without feeling packed in shoulder to shoulder.

Morning beach walks quickly became one of my favorite parts of the trip, especially before the afternoon heat rolled in.

If you’re looking for a Gulf Coast destination that still feels relaxed and approachable, Gulf Shores really delivers.

Where to Eat During a Gulf Shores Getaway

Bahama Bob’s Beach Side Cafe

If you only eat at one casual seafood spot in Gulf Shores, make it Bahama Bob’s.

This place has been a longtime favorite for Chris and his family, and after one meal there, it was easy to understand why people keep coming back year after year.

The ruby reds were easily one of my favorite bites of the trip, and the crab claws absolutely lived up to the hype. Of course, you also can’t skip the famous Bushwacker, which basically tastes like a frozen beach vacation in cocktail form.

It’s casual, fun, and exactly the kind of Gulf Shores experience you hope to find on vacation.

Nonna’s Pizza

After a long beach day, sometimes the move is simply grabbing pizza and heading back to the condo — and that’s exactly what we did with Nonna’s.

We picked up pizza one evening after spending most of the day in the sun, and it ended up being the perfect easy dinner back at the condo. Casual, convenient, and exactly what we were craving after a full beach day.

Perch

For a nicer dinner in Gulf Shores, Perch ended up being one of the highlights of the trip , especially around sunset.

The atmosphere feels upscale without being overly formal, and the views alone make it worth planning dinner around golden hour.

I ordered the coffee-rubbed strip steak, while another standout dish was the seared Gulf fish featuring grouper, corn and crab chowder, fingerling potatoes, and lardons. Everything felt elevated while still embracing Gulf Coast flavors.

They also had a fantastic wine list, which always earns bonus points from me.

Ruby Slipper Cafe

Ruby Slipper will always have a soft spot in my heart from my time living in New Orleans, so I was excited to see one in Orange Beach.

It’s still one of my favorite breakfast and brunch spots before heading out for a beach day, especially if you want something a little more indulgent than a quick coffee and pastry.

The Icehouse Tap Room

Icehouse was a fun casual stop during the trip with a laid-back local feel that fit perfectly with the beach atmosphere.

The Hangout

Yes, it’s touristy. Yes, it’s busy. But honestly? The Hangout is still fun.

Between the beachfront location, constant energy, and live music happening daily, it’s worth stopping by at least once during a Gulf Shores trip.

Sometimes vacation is supposed to be a little cheesy — and this is one of those places that fully embraces it.

Best Time for a Gulf Shores Getaway

We visited May 9–16, and honestly, I would absolutely choose this timeframe again.

The weather was warm enough for full beach days without the intense summer heat and heavy humidity that often arrives later in the season. Even better, the crowds felt manageable almost everywhere we went.

Restaurants were busy but not overwhelming, beach access remained easy, and the overall atmosphere still felt relaxed instead of packed with peak summer tourism.

If you want that sweet spot between spring break crowds and the middle of summer, mid-May felt pretty close to ideal.

The Final Pour

Gulf Shores ended up being exactly the kind of beach getaway we needed — relaxed, easygoing, and full of the simple moments that make vacations memorable.

From frozen Bushwackers and sunset dinners to quiet beach mornings and clear Gulf water, this trip reminded me that sometimes the best vacations don’t need packed itineraries. Just good food, comfortable places to stay, and plenty of time near the water.

What made this trip especially meaningful was experiencing Gulf Shores through Chris’ memories and connection to the area. So many places we visited came with stories from family vacations and years spent along the Alabama coast, which made the entire trip feel more personal.

If you’re looking for another laid-back coastal escape, you can also check out my post on Hilton Head in the Fall for another one of my favorite relaxing beach getaways.

And honestly? I’m already ready to go back.
