Woodinville Wine Weekend

Woodinville Wine Weekend: Wineries & Whale Watching

This summer, my girlfriends and I jetted from Atlanta to Washington’s Woodinville Wine Weekend for a trip packed with tastings, laughter, and stunning views. We didn’t just explore the area’s top wineries; we also went whale watching with Puget Sound Express. With my friend Tracy by my side and Claudia joining us (she was in town visiting her daughter and new grandbaby), it was the perfect blend of wine, adventure, and bonding.

Why Woodinville?

Woodinville might not have the fame of Napa or Sonoma, but it’s a hidden gem that’s earned its place in Washington’s wine scene. Just 30 minutes from Seattle, Woodinville Wine Weekend offers over 130 tasting rooms. It’s easy to spend an entire weekend hopping from one beautiful winery to the next. The town’s laid-back vibe and close-knit community make it a perfect getaway for wine lovers who want to taste exceptional wines without the crowds.

Our Woodinville Wine Weekend Itinerary: A Wine-Fueled Adventure

We kept things relaxed and limited our tastings to 2-3 wineries per day. This gave us plenty of time to savor each experience. Here’s a snapshot of our favorite stops during the Woodinville Wine Weekend:

DeLille Cellars: Where Bordeaux Meets Washington

DeLille is a local favorite for its Bordeaux-style wines. We experienced their Chaleur Blanc release for the 2024 vintage, tasting it side by side with the 2023 vintage. It was fascinating to see how the two vintages compared. It was an incredible experience to see how the two vintages stood up next to each other, highlighting the winery’s commitment to both elegance and innovation. The Chaleur Blanc was especially vibrant and refreshing.

Sparkman Cellars: A Delightful Flight and Perfect Pairings

At Sparkman Cellars, we enjoyed a flight of wines, each showcasing the winemaker’s style. While the wines weren’t our personal favorites, the tasting experience was special. Moreover, the flatbreads and Mediterranean plates paired perfectly with the wines, creating a relaxed and enjoyable stop.

Long Shadows: A Collaboration of Talent

Long Shadows is a testament to the incredible talent in Woodinville’s winemaking community. The winery is a collaboration of renowned winemakers from around the world, each contributing their unique styles to create wines that are as diverse as they are delicious. We loved their Julia’s Dazzle Rosé, which was light and refreshing—perfect for a sunny afternoon in the tasting room.

Jaine Winery: A Hidden Gem

Off the beaten path, Jaine Winery was a delightful surprise. Known for their exceptional white wines, we sampled the Thunderstone Rosé and Connor Lee Chardonnay. Each wine was a reflection of the winemaker’s passion for quality and craftsmanship. If you’re a fan of whites, this is definitely a spot you’ll want to check out.

Chateau Ste Michelle Woodinville

Chateau Ste. Michelle: Washington’s Iconic Winery

No trip for a Woodinville wine weekend is complete without a visit to Chateau Ste. Michelle, the state’s flagship winery. With a rich history dating back to 1934, this winery offers an iconic experience—whether you’re sipping their signature Rieslings or exploring their stunning grounds. It’s easy to see why this place is a crowd favorite.

Novelty Hill-Januik: Modern Design Meets Classic Wine

Next up was Novelty Hill-Januik, where contemporary design meets exceptional wine. Their Reserve Red was a standout, offering a beautiful blend of deep fruit flavors with a smooth finish. The tasting room’s sleek design also made for a memorable experience—perfect for those who appreciate both aesthetics and fine wine.

Mark Ryan Winery: Rock ‘n’ Roll and Red Wines

Mark Ryan Winery is known for its bold wines and rock ‘n’ roll attitude. Their “Dissident” blend is named after the Pearl Jam song, which gave us a fun connection to the music scene while we sipped away. The Dissident Merlot blend was rich, powerful, and full of character—a perfect example of Mark Ryan’s commitment to crafting wines that stand out.

Beyond the Vineyards: Whale Watching in Puget Sound

While Woodinville offered us a wine lover’s paradise, we also ventured out to Puget Sound for a whale-watching adventure that was equally unforgettable. We took a scenic boat tour with Puget Sound Express, hoping to spot some orcas, and we weren’t disappointed. Watching these majestic creatures glide through the water was a humbling experience that gave us a new appreciation for the natural beauty of Washington state.

The tour was easy to book. We were guided by experts who shared fascinating details about marine life. If you’re heading to Woodinville, a whale-watching excursion is a must to balance all the wine-tasting indulgence.
