Carry-On Essentials: What to Pack (and What to Skip)
Whether it’s a quick weekend getaway or a long-haul adventure, your carry-on is your ultimate travel sidekick. After countless flights (and a few lessons learned the hard way), I’ve figured out exactly which carry-on essentials deserve a spot in that bag under the seat, and what just weighs you down.
If you liked my Airport Survival Guide, this list of carry-on essentials is the perfect companion.

What to Always Pack
When it comes to carry-on essentials, it’s all about balance and comfort meets practicality. Here’s what always makes the cut in my bag:
- A change of clothes: If your luggage gets delayed, you’ll still feel fresh when you land.
- Essential toiletries: Toothbrush, face wipes, and mini deodorant—because airplane air isn’t kind to anyone.
- Chargers + portable battery: Nothing ruins a travel day faster than a dead phone at the wrong time.
- Travel documents: Passport, ID, credit cards, and any printed confirmations.
- Snacks: Skip the overpriced airport options and pack your own favorites. I’m a sucker for Chex Mix and Twizzlers.
- Medications: Always keep these on you. Never rely on checked bags for essentials.
- Scarf or wrap: Perfect for when the cabin temp drops (and doubles as a pillow).
- Jewelry and valuables: Your carry-on is the safest place for these. Keep them close at all times.
What to Skip
Even the best travelers tend to overpack. Here’s what I leave behind to make space for the true carry-on essentials:
- Full-size liquids: TSA’s 3.4-ounce rule still applies, even when it’s your favorite shampoo.
- Extra shoes: One pair on your feet and one in your bag is usually plenty.
- Hardcover books: They’re heavy. Opt for an e-reader or downloaded reads instead.
- Too many “just in case” items: Be honest. Do you really need three lip balms and a backup eye mask?
Bonus Tip
Pack your carry-on with intention. Think through what you’ll actually reach for during your flight—comfort, convenience, and peace of mind should always win over “just in case” clutter.
